I’m a chocolate natural hair girl, wife, mother and baker-extraordinaire. I have a passion for sweets and love to make people happy thru baking. I’ve been natural (this time around) for about 2 years. This is actually my third time going natural. Apparently, third time is a charm! It took several times for it to stick, but this is the longest I’ve been natural in my adult life. Prior to this time around, I would get my hair pressed every two weeks. Now, I may go once per quarter to get a deep condition, trim and flat iron.
My hair type is 4A/4B with a few 3B strands in there. I usually co-wash my hair on the weekends with whatever conditioner I have on hand. (Side Note - I am somewhat of a product junkie and always trying the next best thing, so I have quite a few bottles of conditioner. Right now they are Curlz and Giovanni.) I then separate my hair into five sections to prep for detangling and twisting. I detangle with Kinky Curly Knot Today and coconut or olive oil. I mini-twist my hair as I detangle with Lottabody with Carrot Oil and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. If my hair starts to dry, I moisten with a water/shea butter oil mix. (I know it sounds like a lot of oil, but my hair is super dry and it just comes out looking a moisturized shiny black, but not greasy).
I usually wash on a Friday night or Saturday and wear my twists one or two days if I’m lucky, then rock a twist out. After a day or two with the twist out, I then rock the flat twist out. My favorite is definitely the flat twist out. I get really nice spirals…
At night, I lightly mist with the water/shea butter oil mix then cover with a satin scarf and bonnet. (I need double protection because one or the other ends up on the floor). When I flat twist, I use a touch of Shea Moisture’s Curl and Style Milk.
It was a long road, but I am finally back in love with my hair. Whether it’s a wash-n-go or flat twist out I think it’s beautiful!
I am a wife, mother, sister, daughter, writer, volunteer and entrepreneur! I live in Maryland near Baltimore and it has taken time for me to get use to the east coast. I am finally following my passion for writing as I work on my first novel. This is part of the reason for this blog. This hair journey has been an experience. Since I am often asked about my hair, I thought this would be a great avenue to share my experience with others while doing something I love. I have recently started writing articles on my Hubpage for things other than hair.
I love helping others and volunteer with two different organizations:
RAINN – I volunteer with RAINN as part of their speaker’s bureau to inform organizations about rape and incest.
I also volunteer with CASA of Baltimore County - : CASA’s mission is to provide Court appointed volunteers who advocate for the well-being of Baltimore County’s abused and neglected children including their placement in safe and permanent homes.
CASA volunteers provide individual advocacy to children in foster care. CASA volunteers spend between five and ten hours per month assuring the safety of a vulnerable child, and making sure that the child has all the services they need to thrive.
Life as a Chocolate Girl is great and getting better every day!!
