Big hair doesn't equal healthy hair!

After my last post there was something else on my mind.  I absolutely love big hair!!! Big hair rocks!!!  I love 'fros and great braid outs that turn out big.  What I don't love is hair that is not well maintained and unhealthy.

This is kinda on the lines of a previous post I did on natural hair isn't for everyone.  In the previous post, the young lady briefly mentioned that she wasn't taking care of her hair.  Due to her crazy schedule, she wasn't maintain the health of her hair.  This is something that I'm sure many naturals can relate to, myself included.

Many people have a problem holding on unhealthy hair.  The young lady cut 4 inches off her hair because it was unhealthy.  I often trim inches of because of knots and thinned edges when I haven't been keeping up my routine.

Healthy and big hair!!

Just because your hair is big or long doesn't mean it is healthy hair!!!  Ask yourself do you have a great deal of shedding?  Is your hair tangled or knotted?  Is your hair dull and dingy?  Are you edges raggedy and split?  These are all signs of unhealthy hair.  Trimming the split ends or getting back on a good hair routine and a healthy diet (lots of water) are all key to healthy shiny hair!!!

Moisturizing, conditioning and sealing are all key to maintaining healthy hair.  If you have slipped, it's okay.  Get back to a good and consistent routine to revive your hair back to it's natural health!

Say it!

I am so tired as I have been working out and doing some work at home.  I'm ready for a nap before I go to my second job this evening but I came across an awesome video that I had to share.

The young lady in the video is speaking about why she trimmed her hair.  Essential it was because she had a lot of knots and tangles from wearing her hair in an afro a lot.  But if you listen closely, she is really saying she wears 'fros to encourage and empower children (she is a teacher).  It was so awesome to hear her speak of the confidence that many of her children gained from seeing her rock her 'fro.

In our society, so many young, black women are still made fun of and criticized for the texture of their hair.  One such young woman is Vanessa Van Dyke, a 12-year old that was threatened with suspension because her hair was a 'distraction'.

We must do a better job in supporting one another in our journeys and letting young woman and men know that natural is beautiful in all it's many forms.

Watch the video and comment if you've ever experienced any similar situations.

Twisted!!!

So I spent most of today twisting my hair.  I started around 11:00 am and it took me most of the day.  Mostly because I stopped ate, slept, twisted and ate again.  It was worth it because my twist should last me a good week or two.

I always wrap my twist at night.  I recently read a article on Black Girl with long hair about maintaining a twist out that suggested not adding a lot of moisture to your twist as often to help reduce frizziness. Even though it was for a twist out I apply so of these techniques for my twist.  I used to spray my hair with water everyday in twist.  As I have sealed my twist with shea butter and they are well moisturized I will go more days between spritizing with water.

I will report in a few days how my twist are holding up but I absolutely love my twists!!!

Sorry so blurry but twists came out great!

Laying in my favorite spot!

HAPPY NEW YEAR - 2014

Happy New Year to all!  I am so blessed to see another year.  With that said, I am also not happy (totally) with my hair!  While I am so grateful for healthy hair, it still needs work.  My hair sheds the most in the winter and it drives me crazy!!!! Lol

I have recently started to a black tea rinse and I like the results in helping to reduce shedding.  I added a little apple cider vinegar as well.  One thing I don't do is a lot of protective styling.  I would like to retain a little more length this year and I have decided to do more protective styles, mostly in the form of two strand twist.  I have been searching endlessly for some nice styles as hanging down gets boring quickly.

I came across a young lady on Youtube that goes by Kitty51181.  I was so excited as she had so very simple and easy styles that even I can do.  I don't do a lot.  I don't want to spend a lot of time to figure out something to do with my hair.  So tonight I will begin my own personal protective styling challenge.  I'm going to see how much hair I retain over the next 6 months.

I will document my progress month by month.

Wish me luck!

Oprah Rocks Her Natural Hair!

Most days Oprah's hair is straightened but she has often said she is natural.  There have been post of her wearing her braids in the summertime but very few without any alterations since she was in Color Purple.

So it was a delight to catch this clip of Oprah speaking about her natural hair to be seen on the cover of her magazine.

Check it out:

There also is a brief video of her discussing her hair.

Natural Hair Is Not for Everyone

I was recently having a conversation with my mother and she was telling me how someone she worked with commented that they were gonna go natural because "I don't wanna do my hair."  Then today Dee and I had the same conversation after walking and observing a woman that seem to have the same philosophy.

Okay, I can't take it!  This seems to more and more common.  I have seen several women (and some men) that seem to have just rolled out of bed!  If anything, natural hair may require more work, depending on how it is styled.  Now I know some ladies rock fierce 'fros.  Not a prob.  If you talk to them, they still take care of their hair. These women don't just get up and go.  There is care, time and love that goes in to having an awesome 'fro!

Whether you wear natural or relaxed hair, straight or curly; nice, healthy hair requires maintenance.  Healthy hair, like a healthy body means doing something.  Just existing does not cut it!

Somehow along the way, in some people's minds, 'natural hair' equals no work or easy.  Natural hair is definitely not for everyone.  If someone doesn't like taking care of their hair with a relaxer, natural hair is probably  not for you.  If you don't want to pay someone to do your natural hair, probably not for you.  If you don't like doing your own hair, period, natural hair is probably not for you.  If you wanna just roll out of bed, natural hair is probably not for you!!!!

Bottom line, natural hair is NOT for everyone!
